Cow Greetings

(C) 1999 by Howard Dart Humeston

a dozen brown and white cows
stand silently in a green field
as my new pick-up speeds me south
on Florida’s highway 301,

as a tired red sun lays down into
the grass behind the bovines, while
bursts of color skip from under
their legs, and bounces off their backs

over the gentle hum of the tires
a single long “Mooooooo” finds me
as one brown and white raises her head
toward the flat top

I honk my horn twice
returning the greeting
